Subcutaneous or SubQ testosterone injections are quickly gaining in popularity by doctors and patients as the easiest way to self administer Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). Doctors have preferred administering intramuscular (IM) injections for a very long time because they thought that by injecting deeper into the muscle, testosterone delivers into the blood stream easier and stays in your system longer. In fact, many doctors schedule their patients to come to the clinic and have IM testosterone injections once a month, twice a month, or even weekly injection for this reason. We now know that an IM injection peaks your testosterone levels within 18-24 hours and then sees that level gradually recede back to your standing level in 6-7 days. Unfortunately, with commonly used IM testosterone (i.e., cypionate, enanthate, and proprionate) injection every two weeks or month, your body recognizes the additional amount and testosterone effects will wear off after 6 days. Hence, you would have a lower testosterone level than you did if your physician never gave you the IM testosterone injection. More frequent and lower dose SubQ testosterone injections have been proven to keep your levels more stable without having you go through the “yo-yo” or up and down effects.

Subcutaneous Testosterone Injection Benefits
Subcutaneous or SubQ testosterone injections, are growing in popularity for a number of reasons:
- Better testosterone level balance with twice weekly SubQ injections than weekly IM injections
- SubQ testosterone injections into the thigh or abdominal area are far easier to self administer than an IM injection into the glute/hip
- Less painful with smaller gauge needles
- No harm or damage to your glute muscle by stabbing it weekly when injecting into your fat
- No risk of accidentally hitting your sciatic nerve
- Testosterone is absorbed much better with SubQ than IM
After years of testing doctors now understand that by injecting into the layer of fat will still reach your systems and effectively distribute testosterone into your system. Twice weekly SubQ injections will also maintain a consistently higher testosterone level by removing peaks and troughs created by weekly and bi-monthly IM injections.
No More Weekly Visits To The Doctor’s Office
Research shows that it takes on average 18 days to to schedule a physician appointment. The research also shows that there are 121 minutes of wasted time per physician office visit. This is from driving to and from the office, sitting in the waiting room next to sick people, sitting in the office and then spending 3-5 minutes with the nurse before maybe seeing the physician.
Many physicians, and even some Men’s Clinics, require patients to come in once a week for an IM injection. That’s because that is how they make money. They get paid every time you walk into their office.
At Alpha Hormones®, we are teaching our patients how to self administer testosterone injections at home through video visits. We can take a look at the best way to do that and when to do that. IM makes sense for in office injections so the patient doesn’t need to come in twice per week. SubQ offers an easier solution, less painful with a smaller gauge needle, less harmful to your muscle, and less risk of hitting your nerve.
