Understanding the Connection Between Your Gut and Overall Health

Gut health is one part of your overall well-being. Explore the gut-brain connection and microbiome testing, then discuss your questions with a medical provider. Your symptoms, health history, and goals should guide the conversation.

Prepare for Your Visit

Before your appointment, write down your main concerns, when they started, and how they affect daily life. Bring past test results and a list of medicines and supplements. If you have already tried changes or received care elsewhere, note what helped and what did not. This gives your provider useful context for the visit.

Ask About the Next Step

Use the resources below to prepare questions, rather than choosing a test on your own. Ask what a proposed test can tell you, what it cannot tell you, and how the result would change your care. You can also discuss follow-up, costs, and whether another type of evaluation makes sense for your concerns.

When you are ready, book a consultation with our team. For practical details before your visit, review our pricing and membership information.

Common Questions

Gut Health FAQs

When should I see a provider about gut symptoms?

Consider a visit if bloating, irregular bowel habits, reflux, food sensitivities or abdominal discomfort persist or affect daily life. Seek prompt care for blood in the stool, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, fever or severe abdominal pain.

What is the gut-brain connection?

The gut and brain communicate through nerves, hormones and immune signals. Research links this connection to digestion, stress response and mood, which is why your provider looks at sleep, stress and hormones alongside digestive symptoms.

Do I need a microbiome test?

Not always. Microbiome testing is considered when the result could help answer a specific question about your care. Your provider will explain what the test can and cannot tell you before you decide.

What does a gut health evaluation include?

Your provider reviews your symptoms, diet, medications, supplements and history. Depending on the findings, the plan may include standard labs, targeted testing, nutrition and lifestyle changes, or referral to a gastroenterologist when needed.

Does insurance cover gut health testing?

Visits and many standard lab tests may be billed to eligible commercial PPO plans or Medicare. Specialty tests such as microbiome sequencing are often self-pay. Our team can review your benefits and the expected cost before testing.

Is gut health care available by telehealth?

Yes. Consultations and follow-ups are available by telehealth for patients located in California, Florida or Texas. Lab work can be completed at our Pasadena office or an outside lab.
