There is no single “correct” level of sexual desire. If a change in desire is distressing to you, a respectful medical discussion can help identify possible causes and options. Low desire is not proof of a hormone deficiency, and comparing yourself with a survey about other people’s sex lives is not a diagnosis.
Look at the whole picture
Medications, stress, mood, relationship concerns, pain, sleep, medical conditions, and changes around menopause can affect sexual wellbeing. Your clinician may ask when symptoms began, whether they occur in every situation, and what you want help with. Testing should follow that assessment rather than assuming everyone needs a hormone panel. ACOG explains common contributors to sexual concerns.
Pain and vaginal dryness deserve attention in their own right. Treatment may involve local measures, pelvic-floor care, counseling, or medication depending on the cause. Do not stop an antidepressant or another prescribed medicine on your own. See ACOG’s information on pain during sex.
Bremelanotide has a specific indication
Vyleesi (bremelanotide injection) has approval for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. For this indication, low desire must cause marked distress. Another medical or psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or a medication must not explain it. However, its approval does not cover men, postmenopausal women, or enhancement of sexual performance. It is a melanocortin receptor agonist; research has not fully established its precise mechanism in HSDD.
We have removed the earlier article’s broad claims of effectiveness in men and women, including “80%” and “50%” improvements. Those claims lacked adequate evidence. Do not assume that a compounded product or different route of administration equals the approved injection.
Safety matters
Bremelanotide is contraindicated with uncontrolled hypertension or known cardiovascular disease. Its label warns about temporary blood-pressure increases, nausea, and skin darkening that may persist. Medication interactions and pregnancy considerations also require review. See the current Vyleesi prescribing information.
Discuss an individualized next step
Finally, bring your medication list, symptom history, and questions. A consultation may identify non-drug approaches or a condition requiring a different treatment. Read our low-libido evaluation guide or schedule a consultation. We cannot promise a particular treatment or outcome before evaluating your circumstances.
