Anavar is a historical brand name for oxandrolone, an anabolic steroid. This article previously described it as an alternative to testosterone replacement therapy. We have corrected that misleading framing.
What changed in the United States?
FDA withdrew approval of Oxandrin in June 2023. In September 2023, the agency determined that the tablets had been withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness. Its review cited serious liver problems and adverse lipid changes, and concluded that the benefit-risk profile was unfavorable without substantial evidence of effectiveness. Oxandrolone is not testosterone replacement
An anabolic effect is not the same as correcting a diagnosed testosterone deficiency. The earlier article lacked adequate evidence for its claims that oxandrolone increases testosterone, offers a favorable safety profile, or improves cognitive and emotional performance. We have removed them.
A history of medical use or an oral dosage form does not establish that a drug is an appropriate substitute for a current treatment. Online availability also does not establish FDA approval, authenticity, or suitability for an individual.
