What are the symptoms of adrenal fatigue?

Stressed out? Always tired? Do you drag yourself out of bed in the morning and down a cup of coffee just to get up and going? Do you fight fatigue throughout the day? Does the slightest bit of stress send you over the edge? Do you suffer from muscle and/or joint pain, recurrent infections, allergies, anxiety or panic attacks, depression, or low blood sugar or blood pressure? Have you been told that you have chronic fatigue syndrome? You might have adrenal fatigue.

Adrenal fatigue is a common health problem that Americans face today. Unfortunately, most are unaware that this could be the cause of their symptoms because their doctor never brought it up as a possibility. Like low testosterone, it is a common condition that is overlooked by traditional medicine, and many doctors deny that adrenal fatigue is even a real condition; however, we know better.

What is the physiology behind adrenal fatigue?

Physiology Behind Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is also known as Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis Dysfunction. This is because cortisol is made in the adrenal glands and regulated by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which is synthesized by the pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH is released by the hypothalamus. Adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands cannot produce enough cortisol to meet the demands of your body. Cortisol is the only hormone in the body that increases with age. It is made in the adrenal glands and is derived from pregnenolone. Cortisol is commonly known as the “stress hormone” due its involvement in the stress response. In short, you are wearing your adrenal glands out, so you feel increasingly fatigued, stressed, anxious, and many other health conditions may occur as a result.

Causes of adrenal fatigue

Chronic, unrelenting stress, whether physical or psychological or both, eventually leads to adrenal fatigue. It can also occur after acute or chronic infections such as the flu, bronchitis or pneumonia. In today’s fast-paced world, the stress that many people experience on a daily, ongoing basis is a contributing factor. Stressors may include noise, pollution, traffic, inclement weather, injuries, illnesses, emotional conflicts, deadlines, and inadequate sleep.

In Japan, Karoshi is a term that referred to “overwork death.” Yes, you really can work yourself to death. Stress and sleeplessness are surprisingly lethal. It’s linked to cardiovascular disease. More than ever, we need to learn how to do manage stress and take care of ourselves better.

Adrenal Fatigue Treatment: Restoring Balance And Vitality

Understanding Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe a collection of nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, body aches, sleep disturbances, and difficulty coping with stress. It’s believed to result from chronic stress, lifestyle factors, and other imbalances that affect the adrenal glands, which play a crucial role in regulating the body’s stress response and energy levels.

The Importance of Adrenal Health

The adrenal glands produce hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, and DHEA, which help regulate metabolism, immune function, blood pressure, and stress response. Cortisol, in particular, is your body’s naturally occurring stress hormone, essential for survival. Physiological levels of cortisol are crucial for good health as it bolsters the immune system, increases resistance to infections and inflammation, and promotes the assimilation of thyroid and sex hormones by the body’s cells.

Adrenal Dysfunction Testing and Treatment

At Alpha Hormones®, we test for adrenal dysfunction by measuring your blood, salivary, or urine cortisol levels. This helps us understand the state of your adrenal health and tailor treatment accordingly. In addition to bioidentical cortisol (i.e., Cortef or Hydrocortisone), we may incorporate dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), calming (adaptogenic) herbs, and adrenal extracts into our treatment protocols. These holistic approaches aim to support adrenal function, alleviate symptoms of adrenal fatigue, and restore balance to your body’s stress response system.
